Musty smell on the first hot day? That is winter coming out of your cooler.
Most coolers do not need a service. They need a proper clean.
Over winter the pads sit dry and collect dust, the tank water goes stale, and whatever lands on the roof settles inside the unit. Switch it on in the first hot week and all of that comes down the ducts into the house.
A clean once a year, before summer, resets the whole system. See when to clean or what it costs.
Pads clog up
Dry pads collect dust and pollen all winter, so the first air through them is dirty air.
Tank water goes stale
Standing water in the tank grows mould and bacteria. That is the smell.
It all blows inside
The first hot day pushes it through every duct into the rooms you sit in.
Six signs your cooler needs a clean
You do not need to get on the roof to know. The house tells you.
Musty smell on start up
The first blast smells like a wet towel. That is mould in the pads and the tank.
Weak airflow
Rooms take ages to cool down. Clogged pads and dusty ducts choke the air.
White dust on furniture
Fine dust after the cooler runs is coming straight out of the ducts.
Unit running loud
Dry pads and a dirty fan make the unit work harder and louder than it should.
Stale water smell outside
Stagnant tank water you can smell near the roof or the overflow drain.
Not cleaned since last summer
Once a year is the rule. If you cannot remember the last one, it is due.
Two or more of these? Book the clean before the heat. Call 1300-673-828 or get a quote online.
What is actually growing in there and why the house smells on day one
An evaporative cooler is a wet box on the roof. Left alone over winter it does what any wet box does.
Dust, pollen and dried on dirt from six months of Melbourne air. The first run blows it straight into the rooms.
Water that sat still all winter. Mould and bacteria grow in it, and that is the musty smell on start up.
Kids, older people and anyone with asthma or hay fever feel it first. Sneezing, itchy eyes, a cough that comes with the cooler.
Pads washed, tank and lines flushed, then a natural tea tree oil sanitise through the whole system. Fresh air from the first hot day.
Evaporative cooler cleaning vs evaporative cooler service
Most people searching for a service actually need a clean. Here is what each one covers so you book the right thing.
The whole system, in three steps
Every part the air touches, with photos to prove it. Most homes take 2 to 4 hours.
Step 1
Cooler pads and the unit
Pads come out and get flushed clean, or we tell you if they are past saving. Tank, drain lines and housings get a full flush.
- Pads removed and washed
- Tank and drain lines flushed
- Honest call on pad replacement
Step 2
Vents and ductwork
Every ceiling vent comes off and the ducts get blown through into our vacuum, so the air path from roof to room is clear.
- All vents removed and washed
- Ducts air cleaned end to end
- Airflow checked room by room
Step 3
Sanitise and prove it
A natural tea tree oil treatment goes through the system to kill bacteria and the musty smell. Then you get the photos.
- Tea tree oil sanitisation
- Before and after photos
- Function check before we leave
Before and after, drag to compare
Taken by our techs on the job, not staged. Every customer gets their own set.

BeforeAfterA cooler that stopped cooling, and what we found inside
A Melbourne family booked a clean because the fan was running but the rooms stayed warm. This is what was in the unit.
Duct before
Duct afterFan running, almost no cold air. Rooms stayed warm on hot days and the family was ready to replace the unit.
A bird nest lodged inside the cooler and scale blocking the water lines, so the pads were never getting wet.
Nest and debris out, water system flushed, scale cleared from the tray and lines, pads cleaned and sanitised.
Strong cool air through the whole house again. No new unit needed, and it now gets a clean every spring.

From $280 for a single storey home, and most land between $280 and $450. What moves the price is the size of the unit, roof access and whether the pads need replacing. We confirm the price before we start and there is no call out fee. See our cost guide for the detail.
02What does the clean actually include?
Pads out and washed, water tank and drain lines flushed, pad housings and tray cleaned, every ceiling vent removed and washed, ducts blown through into our vacuum, a tea tree oil sanitise through the whole system, then before and after photos and a function check before we leave. Repairs and new pads are not included, we quote those on the day if you need them.
03How long does it take?
Most single storey homes take 1 to 2 hours. Double storey homes or units with a lot of vents can take longer, we tell you when we quote.
04How often should an evaporative cooler be cleaned?
Once a year, ideally in spring before the first hot week. If you have pets, someone with asthma or hay fever at home, or you live near a lot of dust, twice a year is worth it. Our guide on when to clean goes through it.
05Why does my evaporative cooler smell when I turn it on?
Because the water in the tank sat still all winter and the pads dried out with dust in them. Mould and bacteria grow in that, and the first time the fan runs it pushes the smell through every duct in the house. A proper clean and sanitise fixes it. If the smell comes back after a clean the pads are usually past it and need replacing.
06What causes mould in an evaporative cooler?
Standing water, warmth and no light. The tank and the wet pads are exactly that from autumn to spring. Draining the tank at the end of summer helps, but the pads still hold moisture, which is why the clean and the tea tree oil sanitise before summer matter.
07Can a dirty evaporative cooler make you sick?
It can set people off. The dust, pollen and mould spores that build up over winter come out through the vents, and kids, older people and anyone with asthma or hay fever feel it first. Sneezing, itchy eyes or a cough that starts when the cooler starts is the usual sign.
08Do the pads need replacing every year?
No. Washed properly, pads last several seasons. They need replacing when they go brittle and crumble, have holes, or still smell after a clean. We tell you on the day and quote it before touching anything.
09Can I clean it myself?
You can hose the pads and drain the tank, and that helps. What you cannot do easily is the ducts and vents, the sanitise through the whole system, or the roof safely. Here is what you can do yourself and where to stop.
10Cleaning or a service, which one do I need?
Smell, dust, weak airflow or a unit that has not been touched since last summer is a clean. If the unit will not start, the pump is dead or it is showing error codes, that is a service. Call us and we tell you straight which one it is.
